Economic Value Added


Hallo readers, today I want to give you a material reading about ECONOMIC VALUE ADDED or we can called it “EVA”.  Anyone know about EVA? Let me explain you something about EVA J

According Amin Widjaja Tunggal (2008), Economic Value Added (EVA) is a financial management systeml to measure economic profit in a company, which states that welfare can only be created if the company is capable to fulfill all operating costs and capital costs.

The Economic Value Added concept was first introduced by G. Bennet Steward, III, Managing Partner from Stern Steward & Co in his book “The Quest For Value” (Harper Business, 1991). The EVA concept became financial management system. According to the Economist magazine (2 August 1997) more than 300 companies in the world had adopted this system that based from EVA (Economic Value Added). These companies for example such as Coca cola, Quaker Oats, Boise Cascade, Briggs & Stratton, Lafarge, Siemens, Tate & Lyle, Telecome New Zealand, Telstra, Monsanto, SPX, Herman Miller, JC penney, and US Portal Services (Joel M. Stern, 2001, page 15-16).

Economic Value Added (EVA) is profits that left after reduced by cost of capital which invested to produce that profits. EVA is a benchmark value-based financial performance. EVA is a brenchmark which explain the absolute amount from shareholder value that created in a given period, actually for one year. EVA provide a good brenchmark of the value added by the company to shareholders. Therefore, if manager focus on Economic Value Added, then it will help ensure that they operate in a consistent way to maximize shareholder value.

Economic Value Added is indicator of value created from an investment. Economic Value Added Positive if the result of return higher than rate of return that investor wanted it, which means company have maximize their company’s value or indicate crating value. Whereas Economic Value Added  indicate negative value, signify that company’s value is reduce so that the rate of return resulting lower than rate of return desired by investor, which means the company not success create the value for capital’s owner or indicate destroying value.

English Business 2 - Exercise 3

The correct answer must be fined, because have to pay fine is not grammatically parallel with the others.
Then the correct sentence is, If motorist do not observe the traffic regulations, they will be stopped, ticketed, and fined.

7.      Fred, who usually conducts the choir rehearseals, did not show up last night because he had an accident on his way to the practice.
This sentence must be used the past perfect tense, because the action has already happened.
Then the correct answer is “Fred, who usually conducts the choir rehearseals, did not show up last night because he had had an accident on his way to the practice.

8.      A short time before her operation last month, Mrs. Carlyle dreams of her daughter who lives overseas.
Because the action already happened in the past, then the sentence must be past tense. So, the dreams must be change to the dreamed.
Then, there is the correct sentence : “A short time before her operation last month, Mrs. Carlyle dreamed of her daughter who lives overseas.”

9.      The atmosphere in Andalucia is open, warm, and gives a welcome feeling to all who have the good fortune to visit there.
The sentence of gives a welcome feeling must be change to welcome. Because gives a welcome feeling is not grammatically parallel with the others.
Then, the correct sentence would be like this : “The atmosphere in Andalucia is open, warm and welcome to all who have the good fortune to visit there.

10.  Some of the people were standing in the street watched the parade, while others were singing songs.
Watched is the incorrect answer, because this sentence is not parallel with the others. The others use past continous tense, then it should use past continous tense too. Watched must be change to be watching.
Then, the correct sentence would be like this : “Some of the people were standing in the street watching the parade, while others were singing songs.”

Kota Tua or Old Town Jakarta

Hello readers..
In this post I would like to share a story to you about my traveling with my mom..
Yesterday, 5th May 2013 in the morning my mom asked me to accompany with her to walk around Jakarta city.. then, I took her to Old Town Jakarta or we known as Kota Tua..
Kota Tua is a small area in Jakarta, Indonesia. It also known as Old Jakarta and Old Batavia. It spans 1.3 square kilomteres of North Jakarta and West Jakarta. This area is one of many place that will be destination by tourists. Around the area, there are museums such as Museum of Bank Indonesia, Museum Fatahilah/Museum Jakarta, Museum Wayang etc.. you can get information about Old Jakarta in here.

Okay, I will share my traveling with my mom.. start from our house located at Pisangan Lama, East Jakarta Rawamangun, we took Traditional Transportation or we called it "angkot" 02 toward to Jatinegara Station..
from Jatinegara station, we bought two Comuterline tickets destination Jakarta Kota, it prices Rp 7.500/ticket
after we arrived at Jakarta Kota Station, we walked to our first destination, Bank Indonesia Museum.. you can get information about Museum of Bank Indonesia in here. After we visit Museum of Bank Indonesia, we go to the next destination, Museum Fatahilah or it also known as Museum of History Jakarta.
For you information, I have been training guide in this Museum Fatahilah, and on that day, it was my turn to guide my mom to surround Museum Fatahilah.. after we walked around the museum, I felt something strange that there was a missing place.. the place was the underground prison that inundated by water..
I clearly remembered that there were an underground prison inundate by water, but when I came last day, the prison was gone.. I can't found that prison.. okay, forget about that prison, back to the story :p

after we walked around the museum Fatahilah, our next destination is Museum Wayang. Museum Wayang is a museum dedicated to Javanese wayang puppetry. The museum is located in west side of Fatahilah Square, near Jakarta History Museum and Fine Art and Ceramic Museum. Well, you can get information about Wayang Museum in here. In this Museum, I interested to the Jan Pieterszoon Coen's Statue which mark his grave.. yes, there are a grave in the Wayang Museum, and not just that, there are more beautiful statue in this wayang museum.. but it's very sadness to see that many people who don't know about this information :(

yeaah, back to the story, after we visited Wayang Museum, me and my mom walked around the park XD
and we rent an Ontel and ride it to walked around the park, it was much fun! the area was crowded by tourist, the event, and the bazaar.. so excited! after that, we go home :)
I hope I can visit that museums again..

English Bussiness #2 : The Written Expression Questions


TOEFL EXERCISE : Choose the letter of the underlines word or group of words that is not correct.

    The incorrect answer is (A) know., because the subject (nobody) is singular, then we should add s to the “know”.
    It will become like this, nobody knows the procces of glass-making was invented.

    The incorrect answer is (A) presents, because the subject (the languagws of the world) is plural, then we should get rid of the -s from “presents”.
    The correct sentence will become like this, the languages of the world present a vast array of structural similarities and difference.

  2. The rise of multinatonals (A) have (B) resulted in a great deal of legal ambiguity because multinationals (C) can (D) operate in so many juridictions.
    The incorrect answer is (A) have, because the subject is singular, then the correct answer is "has" not "have".
    the correct sentence should be like this : The rise of multinationals has resulted in a great deal of legal ambiguity because multinationals can operate in so many juridictions. 

  3. All of the east-west interstate highways in the United States (A) has even (B) numbers, while north-south interstate highways (C) are (D) odd-numbered.
    The incorrect answer is (A) has, because the subject (all of the east-west highways in the Unites States) is plural, then we should use “have” not “has”. "has" for singular, not plural.
    The correct version is, all of the east-west interstate highways in the United States have even numbers, while north-south interstate highways are odd-numbered.

  4. (A) When a massive star in the large Magellanic Cloud (B) exploded in 1987, a wave of neutrinos (C) were (D) detected on Earth.
    The incorrect answer is (C) were, it should be "was" because the subject (a wave of neutrinos) is singular.
    The correct version : When a massive star in the large Magellanic Cloud exploded in 1987, a wave of neutrinos was detected on Earth.

  5. Every open space in the (A) targeted area that (B) has grass and few bushes (C) are (D) occupied by the white-crowned sparrow.
    The incorrect answer is (C) are, because the subject is singular, the we should replace "are" with "is".

    The Incorrect answer is (B) put, because the subject is singular, then we must add -s/-es to "put" become "puts".

  7. The term “Yankee” (A) was originally a nickname for people from New England, but now anyone from the United States (B) are (C) reffered (D) to as a Yankee.
    The incorrect answer is (B) are, because the subject “anyone from the United States” is singular, then we must replace “are” with “is”.
    The correct version should be like this : the term “Yankee” was originally a nickname for people from New England, but now anyone from the United States is reffered to as a Yankee.

  8. A network of small arteries, mostly (A) sandwiched between the skin and the (B) underlying muscles, (C) supply (D) blood to the face and scalp.
    The incorrect answer is (C) supply, because the subject is singular and “supply” must be add by -s/-es become “supplies”.
    The correct version is “a network of small arteries, mostly sandwiched beetween the skin and the underlying musles, supplies blood to the face and scalp”.
  1. Mesquite (A) is a (B) small tree in the Southwest (C) who can (D) withstand the severest drought.
    The incorrect answer is © who, because the subject is clearly a thing, not human, then we should replace “who” with “that” or “which”.
    The correct version will be like this, mesquite is a small tree in Southwest which/that can with stand the severest drought.

What is TOEFL?


Hallo guys.. In order to fulfill my soft skill's task – English Bussiness's task. This time, I will post an article and give you some explanations about TOEFL.

What is TOEFL? TOEFL is abreviation from Test of English as a Foreign Language. It's a test of English Language proficiency which very needed by speaker whom their native language is not English. TOEFL organized by ETS (Educational Testing Service) in United States of America (USA) for all the test takers from around the world.

The TOEFL test is the most widely respected English-language test in the world. In generally, this test required for college entrance requirements at most universities in the United States of America and Canada. TOEFL recognized by more than 8.500 colleges, universities, intituions, government agencies, scolarship programs and bussiness in more than 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the United States.

For you information, TOEFL is more oriented to the American English. The TOEFL iBT format has progressively replaced both the computer-based tests (CBT) and paper-based tests (PBT). Although paper-based testing is still used in select areas. The minimum score of TOEFL is about 310, and the maximum score of TOEFL is about 677 for the PBT version (Paper-Based Tests). The best chance for you success with the TOEFL is prepare and practice.

This test consists of four sections, the sections are :

  1. Listening, it takes 30-40 minutes. The Listening section consists of 3 parts. The first one contains 30 questions about short conversations. The second part has 8 questions about longer conversations. The last part asks 12 questions about lectures or talks.
  2. Structure and Written Expression, it takes 25 minutes. The Structure and Written Expression section has 15 exercises of completing sentences correctly and 25 exercises of identifying errors.
  3. Reading Comprehension, it's take 55 minutes. The Reading Comprehension section has 50 questions about reading passages.
  4. Writing, it takes 30 minutes. The Writing section is one essay with 250-300 words in average.

LETTER OF INVITATION

An invitation is a request to attend or participate in an event. It could be invitation to a meeting, conference, seminar, an exhibition, open house, product launching event, a party etc. We can invite persons to attend or to participate as speaker, presenter, or other roles.
Some event are purely business event such as meeting or conference. Some of them are semi-business events such as open house, company anniversary celebration or graduation ceremony. Some events are purey social es such as a brithday, engagement party, or wedding party.
An invitation letter serves the purpose of inviting a guest to a party, event or celebration while conveying more information than a traditional invitation card. It serves two purposes; one, to invite the individual to the event and two, to ensure that the person receiving the letter is going to attend.
Formal events (either bussiness or social) require formal invitation. A formal event refer to formally arranged event such as wedding recetion, inauguration ceremony. Informal events require informal invitation.
Formal invitation ussually is written in card (card type) and sometimes is handwritten. The format and the language is very standard. The language is also less personal.
There are two tenses used within the invitation letter, the present and the future. The present tense conveys information about the event and the future tense ensures the guest is going to attend.

Invitation letter have three parts :
  1. Invite the reader to attend or participate
  2. Inform reason for the event
  3. Inform the time, date and place of the event

Softskill English Bussiness #2 : Structure and Written Expression

EXERCISE A
No.5. In a box on the top shelf of the cabinet in the hallway of the house.
The answer is wrong (incorrect sentence). There's no verb and no subject in this sentence. "a box" in this sentence can we called as the object of preposition, and the object of the preposition is not the subject.
So, to get the correct sentence, we can change this sentence with additionally the subject and the verb.
Subject : Anny
Verb : Find
It would be like this : Anny finds a box on the top shelf of the cabinet in the hallway of the house. ( I change it to the present tense)


EXERCISE B
No. 9. The plane from New York circling the airport.
The answer is Wrong (incorrect sentence).
There's a subject and a verb in this sentence, but there's no the prepositional phrase that come before the verb.
The subject is "the plane" (with the underline) and the verb is "circling" (with the underline and italic). But the sentence is incorrect. We should notice the "circling". The "circling" can not stand alone in this sentence, then we should add the auxiliary verbs to complete the sentence. The auxiliary verbs that match in this sentence is auxiliary 'is'. With additionally the auxiliary verbs 'is', this sentence become present continuous tense.
And this is the complete/the correct sentence.
The plane from New York is circling the airport. (Present Continuous Tense)

TOEFL EXERCISE
No. 5. Between 1725 and 1750, New England witnessed an increase in the specialization of _____.
The answer is (A) occupations.
Because this sentence is the past tense, and have the verb 2 (witnessed), it'll not suitable with the answer of (B), (C) and (D). The other answer is not match with the sentence.
